Explosive New Allegations: Farage Accused of Hiding Benefits from Fraud-Convicted Ally as Probe Deepens

LONDON, July 5, 2026 – Nigel Farage, the firebrand leader of Reform UK, is facing a fresh storm of controversy after reports emerged that he may have violated parliamentary transparency rules by failing to declare thousands of dollars in hidden benefits from a longtime ally convicted of wire fraud in the United States. The explosive allegations, first reported by The Sunday Times, land just weeks after Farage entered a separate ethics investigation over an undeclared $6.4 million gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire.

According to the report, George Cottrell, a 32-year-old convicted fraudster who pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2017, provided Farage with a package of "in-kind" support in the year leading up to his election as MP for Clacton in July 2024. This included security personnel and social media staff who managed Farage’s online content. The newspaper also claims Farage used a luxury London apartment near Buckingham Palace that was rented by Cottrell. Under House of Commons rules, MPs must register all financial interests and "registrable benefits" received in the 12 months before their election, unless they are purely personal gifts.

Farage’s spokesman dismissed the report as "baseless and contrived," arguing that the support occurred during a period when Farage was "not even an active politician." The spokesman stated: "Contrary to the story's tone, no parliamentary rules have been broken." A source close to Farage insisted that Reform UK paid for his security and staff after he returned to frontline politics in June 2024, and flatly denied that the MP ever stayed at Cottrell’s rented property.

However, the timing of the allegations is politically devastating. Farage is already under investigation by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner over a $6.4 million gift from British cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne in early 2024. Farage has claimed that money was for personal security and was "purely private." Labour Party officials seized on the latest report, with a spokesperson declaring: "Nigel Farage and Reform are engulfed in a huge and growing scandal. These new allegations of secret payments from a wealthy convicted fraudster raise serious questions about his fitness for office."

The revelations come as Farage’s Reform UK party continues to gain traction in opinion polls, challenging both Labour and the Conservatives. Critics argue that the pattern of undeclared benefits—from a convicted criminal and a billionaire donor—suggests a deliberate strategy to circumvent transparency laws. With the ethics probe already underway, these new claims could force Farage to testify under oath, potentially triggering a formal parliamentary inquiry that threatens his political future.
